The European Union has for the first time extended the economic sanctions imposed on Russia for a year instead of six months, the spokeswoman of the President of the European Council, António Costas, announced on Thursday.
Since 2022 Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the EU began to apply wide-ranging measures to Moscow.
The sanctions primarily target Russia’s revenues from international trade in fossil fuels, the country’s arms industry and financial institutions.
Moscow prefers diplomacy “to achieve SVO goals,” as Russian officials have said after threats of a massive attack on Ukraine.
According to Russian media, this was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, RBC-Ukraine reports.
“Russia wants the goals of the SVO to be achieved through diplomatic means,” Lavrov said after the Kremlin’s threats to launch a massive attack on Ukraine the day before.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin fears the return of his army and the end of the war.
