UNICEF says it is “gravely concerned” about a string of disturbing incidents involving children in Belize over the past month. Reports include missing teenagers, children found dead, abuse videos circulating online, and multiple reports of sexual abuse carried out by people the children knew and trusted.
“These incidents point to a deeply troubling reality that too many children in Belize are being harmed in spaces where they should be safest,” the organization said in a statement.
Sajid Ali, UNICEF’s Representative for Belize, said “violence against children is a grave violation of their rights and must never be normalized or excused.” He added, “Children are never to blame for abuse. The responsibility lies squarely with adults to act, without hesitation, in the best interest of every child.”
UNICEF noted that while some cases have drawn national attention after being shared online, many more remain unseen and unreported. A recent Multiple Indicator Survey (MICS7) found that violence most often occurs in familiar settings, at the hands of people children already know and trust, inside homes, schools, and communities where they are supposed to feel safe.
The agency said protecting children is not only the job of authorities but of every adult. Together with the National Commission for Families and Children, UNICEF has launched the Blue Teddy Bear Campaign, encouraging communities to recognize and report abuse.
UNICEF says it will continue working alongside the Government of Belize to strengthen child protection systems, push for legislative reform, and ensure that those responsible for protecting children are held accountable. But the agency was clear that systems alone are not enough. Real change, they say, starts in the community.
