he authorities in Batam City are still waiting for the law enforcement process relating to hundreds of containers of electronic waste from the United States due to a transfer of authority on the issue at the central government level.
Batam Mayor and Batam Free Trade Zone Authority chairman Amsakar Achmad said that he could not yet issue any technical statements on the transfer of authority for e-waste re-export from the Environmental Ministry to the Office of Coordinating Economy Minister.
He said the transfer has slowed the handling of waste re-export, which is believed to be hazardous and toxic.
“I cannot give any comments about this because the case is still in law enforcement process,” he said at Engku Hamidah Grand Mosque on Thursday.
He stressed the importance of waiting for the results of the examination by the authorities before he could take any steps or comment on the policy.
“This needs to be done to ensure data accuracy on the status of those goods in the containers,” he said.
“There will be reports and a media release. I will tell you media once the release is issued.”
