United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres met with Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé on Tuesday, June 16, at the National Palace in Port-au-Prince, where discussions focused on Haiti’s ongoing transition efforts and the country’s security challenges.
United Nations Caribbean News reported that, during the meeting, the Secretary-General commended the work being carried out by Haitian authorities to advance key priorities of the transitional government, including strengthening security, improving the justice system, supporting reintegration initiatives, and preparing for future elections.
He also reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Haiti through its agencies and representatives, including the continued involvement of his Special Representative.
At the same time, Guterres expressed serious concern about the continued impact of gang violence across the country, noting that women and children remain among the most affected.
According to UNIC, both leaders welcomed the recent establishment of the United Nations Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH), which will provide logistical and operational assistance, as well as progress made in deploying the Gang Suppression Force (GSF). The Secretary-General and Prime Minister Fils-Aimé emphasized that sustained international support remains critical as Haiti continues to confront its complex and multidimensional crisis.
