POLICE are searching for two men who escaped custody after a high-speed chase which resulted in their vehicle colliding with the marked police vehicle along the Uriah Butler Highway.
According to police reports, officers attached to the Highway Patrol Unit were conducting a drunk-driving exercise along Munroe Road, Chaguanas, near Abraham’s Grill, around 11.05 p.m., on June 12, when Corporal Andrews attempted to stop a vehicle travelling west along the roadway.
The driver failed to comply and continued driving. PC Mosca, accompanied by PC James, then pursued the vehicle in a marked police patrol vehicle.
Police said the fleeing vehicle continued along Munroe Road and, upon reaching the Munroe Road overpass, officers attempted to intercept it. Despite the use of sirens and emergency lights, the driver allegedly failed to stop and struck the left rear door of the police vehicle, causing minor damage.
The vehicle then turned north onto the Guayamare Link Road and continued at a high rate of speed. Officers maintained the pursuit as the vehicle approached the Guayamare Bridge and then entered a path connecting the Guayamare Link Road and the Uriah Butler Highway before proceeding north onto the highway.
Police reported that officers made a further attempt to intercept the vehicle while it was travelling in the left lane near the Guayamare Bridge. During that manoeuvre, the fleeing vehicle collided with the marked police vehicle and came to a stop on the highway shoulder.
Officers then observed two occupants exit the vehicle through the passenger-side door and run west into nearby bushes, where they escaped. The aban-doned vehicle was later taken to the Chaguanas Police Station by Highway Patrol officers.
Arrangements were made for officers of the Crime Scene Investigation Unit to photograph both the police vehicle and the abandoned vehicle as investigations continue.
WPC Gunn is continuing enquiries.
