In the show Král na tahu on ta3 TV, PS MEP Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová was asked by the audience whether she considers Robert Fico’s meetings with world statesmen to be “isolation” of the prime minister.
Viewer’s question in the show Kral na tahu read: “Mrs. Ostrihoňová, after Robert Fico’s meetings with the leaders of great powers such as China, the USA, Brazil, Vietnam, Russia, the Prime Minister of India visited Slovakia for the first time. How do you assess this “isolation”?
“I would be very happy if the prime minister met, for example, Friedrich Merz, whose visit he had to invent. Or with Keir Starmer, or with Volodymyr Zelensky, whose country protects Slovakia on the eastern border from Russia, which the prime minister likes to go to so enthusiastically,” she answered.
The Slovak Prime Minister met with several politicians at the summit in Brussels, and one of them was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky: “I am very glad that the dialogue between us continues, even if we do not have the same opinion on all topics. However, it would be bad if such a supporter of dialogue as I did not conduct a dialogue with the Ukrainian president,” Fico said of the meeting.
Fico met German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a working meeting in October 2025 on the grounds of the German permanent representation to the European Union in Brussels. They also had a joint telephone conversation in January 2026. Fico recently announced that he would meet with Merz at the end of May 2026 in Slovakia, the German chancellor was supposed to have a private program here. The German side eventually canceled the meeting and the visit did not take place.
“It is Hungary, it is Poland, it is Germany that are our natural partners, business partners, geopolitical partners. And we should have good relations with them. The Prime Minister should try to have good relations with them,” Cifrová Ostrihoňová continued.
The Prime Minister from Brussels informed that a short coordination meeting of the V4 countries, i.e. Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, was held, and the Prime Ministers agreed that they had “an eminent interest in reviving this format to the maximum extent possible.” From July 1, 2026, Slovakia will take over the seventh presidency of the Vyšehrad Four, but the next V4 meeting will be held in Budapest in a few days.
“Also at a time when, even on the floor of the European Parliament, a resolution was adopted that talks about Slovakia. And European funds have never been so threatened as they are now. So he should immediately come to Brussels and iron out what his government has done. Because the European Union is a living space from which we have benefited for over 20 years. Slovak men and women benefit from it. And Mr. Prime Minister should behave accordingly,” Cifrová finished the answer to the audience’s question Ostrihoňová.
Fico said that the “friends of cohesion” met in Brussels, that is, the states of the European Union, which consider it important to eliminate regional differences within the EU in solidarity. He concluded that Slovakia plays a “very active” role in this regard.
