The search and rescue operation in the ruins of the building that collapsed after a powerful explosion, on Friday September 25, in the area of Plaka, in the heart of Athens, has ended with a tragic result.
Firefighters and EMAK teams have pulled out the bodies of six missing persons, among them three Albanians, from the ruins.
According to the information so far, among the victims are Florinda Hoxha and her husband, Ian Alexander Kirkpatrick, who were recently married. The couple was in Greece for their honeymoon.
Florinda’s brother, Florin Hoxha, and his wife Eris Çani also lost their lives.
According to the published information, the couple was staying in the same building and it is said that they were expecting a child.
Greek media have published photographs of the victims. The other two victims were an elderly couple who lived on the second floor. It is about Athina Paparescu and Edmond Hingis, 77 years old, of British origin, according to preliminary information.
Investigations into the causes of the explosion
Meanwhile, the Greek authorities have launched investigations to determine the exact causes of the explosion and the collapse of the building. Preliminary suspicions have centered on the possibility of a gas leak, but experts will examine all data and evidence collected at the scene to determine what caused the tragedy.
