PARAMARIBO — In what is described as “a large-scale traffic control”, Latour police checked 341 vehicles between 6 and 11 p.m. on Thursday. The Suriname Police Corps (KPS) wrote on its website on Friday (today) that 29 drivers were fined for various violations. The reports were issued for driving without a valid driver’s license or outside the correct category (10), a vehicle that had not been re-inspected (9), an uninsured vehicle (6) and driving with illegal or unauthorized lighting (4).
According to the KPS, the five-hour targeted check was intended to increase road safety and preventively combat crime in the neighborhood. “The focus of this roadblock was explicitly on prevention and awareness,” it is stated. “Drivers without a driver’s license or insurance pose a direct danger to themselves and other road users. On the other hand, a visible police presence serves as a preventive measure against crime.”
The KPS announced on Friday that such checks will take place more often in the coming period. The actions will be held at varying locations within Paramaribo, both during the day and in the evenings. The police therefore urgently call on all road users to get their vehicle documents in order. At the same time, society is asked to remain alert and report suspicious situations immediately via 115 or to a police station.
