PARAMARIBO – The Ogem Employees’ Organization Suriname (Owos), the union at the Energy Companies Suriname (EBS), presented the ongoing conflict within the company to President Jennifer Simons on Tuesday during an introductory meeting.
During the maintenance, in addition to the introduction, the current situation within the state energy company was also extensively discussed. According to Owos chairman Marciano Hellings, the conflict between the union and management was explicitly discussed. That conflict recently led to a layoff within the company.
The union indicates that it is necessary that steps are taken in the short term to restore peace within the organization. According to Hellings, stability within EBS is of great importance, given the role the company plays in the national energy supply.
The President’s office has indicated that dialogue between the parties involved will be pursued. According to Hellings, it has been emphasized that a structured transition within the energy company is only possible if consultation takes place between management and employee representation. The president is said to have indicated that she will take action on the situation in the short term.
The head of state will delve further into the matter and invite both parties for consultations, with the aim of restoring peace within the company. The union chairman says he has confidence in that approach. “The president is an authority in himself. If she sees the seriousness of the matter and has indicated that she will tackle this, then you have to have faith in that,” says Hellings.
In addition, the Owos chairman emphasizes the importance of EBS for broader society. He describes energy supply as essential for economic development. With the rise of the oil and gas sector, he also sees new opportunities for the company and for Suriname in general.
However, according to Hellings, the future of EBS depends heavily on good governance and a clear strategic direction. “Everything depends on strategic leadership, a plan, a multi-year vision and a future-oriented policy,” he said. He added that if both management and government policies are well aligned, the prospects for the company could be positive.
