Warm days bring with them the return of mosquitoes and ticks, which spoil many people’s stay outdoors. Instead of chemical agents, some experts recommend a natural solution in the form of catnip, a plant that can decorate a garden, balcony or terrace at the same time. Catnip is known to attract cats due to the compound nepetalactone.
In many cats, this ingredient causes playful behavior, rolling on the ground, rubbing against plants and a short-term state of euphoria that usually lasts ten minutes. The plant is not harmful to cats or addictive, although not all cats react equally to it, especially the very young and the very old.
The same compound that attracts cats has a completely different effect on mosquitoes. Nepetalactone is considered a natural repellent, which is why catnip is often planted near places where people spend most of their time during the summer.
It is recommended to plant next to the entrances to the house, on balconies, next to garden furniture or near windows. For a more intense effect, it is possible to crush a few leaves between your fingers to release more essential oils and enhance the scent of the plant.
The famous American television chef Martha Stewart previously said that during the summer she planted catnip in her yard and noticed that the mosquitoes, which were a problem for her before, began to avoid her.
Although it cannot completely replace other methods of protection against insects, catnip is considered a useful addition to gardens and balconies. In addition to its practical purpose, many appreciate it as an ornamental plant and often compare it to lavender.
