An alleged riot was recorded in the Western Penitentiary Center (CPO), known as the Santa Ana prison in the state of Táchira. This was reported by the non-governmental organization Venezuelan Prisons Observatory (OVP).
According to what was detailed by the organization through X, the incident occurred this Friday, September 25 and It left a balance of several injured prisoners.
“According to what was reported to the OVP team, at the time of the delivery of the parcel, some officials allegedly mistreated the relatives of those deprived of liberty, a situation that would have bothered the inmates, who decided to raise their voices to complain about the mistreatment,” the observatory indicated.
The OVP reported that there is a strong secrecy on the part of the authorities of the Ministry for the Penitentiary Service, who have not issued any formal statement on the case. Likewise, the organization warned about the anguish of the relatives, who They fear that the situation will worsen due to the possible intervention of officials from the Immediate Response and Custody Group (SIRG).
They urge to attend to the riot
Due to this situation, The organization urged the Ombudsman’s Office to move to the prison headquarters in the state of Táchira. He asks that the status of the inmates be verified and that the complaints of their loved ones be heard.
“From OVP we urge the Ombudsman’s Office to go to the prison to verify what happened and listen to the next of kin. Likewise, we demand that the Ministry of Penitentiary Services report on the alleged riot and publish a list of the people who were injured.”
On the other hand, the organization mentioned that they are verifying the details of the event and assured that they will report any violation of the inmates’ human rights to international bodies.
