Two days before the expiration of the constitutional deadline for the election of the President of Kosovo, the political parties still do not have an agreement, with opposing positions of the government and the opposition.
The representative of the Self-Determination Movement Adnan Rustemi stated that there is a readiness to find a solution if there is political will of all parties, but he could not specify the next steps of his party.
“If there is the will of all parties, Konjufca is ready to start the procedure and provide opportunities and chances. I cannot predict what the procedures of Self-Determination will be these days, but we are interested in finding a solution, giving the country a president and avoiding unnecessary elections,” Rustemi told KosovaPress.
He added that, in the case of holding two extraordinary elections within four months, the responsibility would be borne by the opposition, which he claims does not show even the slightest willingness to compromise.
On the other hand, representative of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (DPK), Enver Hoxhaj, said that the party considers the issue of the election of the president closed.
“We have exhausted this topic with the decision made by the Administrative Council. The leadership of the DPK and our representative group will adhere to that decision. We have said what we had to say, and at this stage we have no other position,” said Hoxhaj.
Representative of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (ABK), Time Kadrijaj, reiterated that the party will not support a candidate who comes from the ranks of Self-Determination, but left the possibility of considering a compromise solution.
Deputies have until April 28 to elect a president, otherwise the Parliament will be automatically dissolved, and new elections will be called within 45 days.
In the meantime, Self-Determination called on the DPK and the Democratic Union of Kosovo (DSK) to propose three candidates for the presidency, stating that in that case Glauk Konjufca and Fatmire Kolçaka would withdraw their candidacies.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that he expects specific names by the end of the day.
