The Vatican reported this Tuesday October 13 that the tumor removed from Pope Leo XIV during a thoracic intervention in Rome turned out to be cancerous. Clinical analyzes confirmed the presence of lung adenocarcinoma, which led to complete removal of the lower lobe of the right lung.
The operation was carried out at the Agostino Gemelli University Polyclinic. According to the official report of the Holy See, the surgical procedure was carried out successfully and without incident, allowing the pontiff to return to his room after waking up favorably from anesthesia.
The surgery was headed by Professor Stefano Margaritora, director of the thoracic surgery service at the healthcare center, together with Professor Elisa Meacci and doctors María Teresa Congedo and Leonardo Petracca.

Surgical scope and medical evolution
The medical team stated that the pontiff He spent around three hours in the surgical area, although the specific intervention lasted around 90 minutes. The specialists opted for radical resection of the lower lobe to ensure the total removal of the compromised tissue.
The Holy See reported that the pontiff’s hearing schedule was temporarily suspended while his post-operative recovery progresses in the Roman hospital. Likewise, he indicated that he will offer new medical reports on his evolution in the coming hours.
