Today, the United Nations stressed the urgent need to reduce the escalation in the city of El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State in western Sudan, calling on all parties in the region to take all necessary measures to respect and protect civilians.
During a press conference, United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric called for avoiding any measures that might further aggravate the already deteriorating humanitarian situation and expose the lives of civilians to more risks.
He reported that there were more drone attacks yesterday, Thursday, noting that the area is still “inaccessible,” and that the United Nations does not have a permanent presence in the city of (Al-Obeid).
Despite the restrictions imposed on access, Dujarric stressed that the United Nations partners in the humanitarian field continue to work on the ground, in cooperation with the World Food Program and others, to transport relief materials and assist residents in an area housing more than one hundred thousand displaced people, reiterating the need not to allow violations to be repeated in the city.
The United Nations and Western countries had warned of an imminent attack on the city of El Obeid, noting that the attack could lead to the commission of crimes and deepen the disastrous effects on the civilian population, which is already suffering from tragic conditions.
