The seafront of Livorno was particularly loved – because it was full of ideas and suggestions – by the Macchiaioli painters: the painting La Rotonda dei Bagni Palmieri is set in this scenario, created in 1866 by Giovanni Fattori, who was one of the greatest exponents of this artistic movement. In the shade of a yellow ocher awning, seven wealthy women are depicted taking “air baths” in the sea, as was customary at that time: in fact, it was not appropriate for bourgeois ladies to appear in a bathing suit. These ladies wear hats and long skirts. Each is captured in a different attitude, in the sign of a studied rhythmic progression.
