The return of skirmishes with Algeria reinforces fears that France's interests will be lost

    father-in-law

While Algerian-French relations are still mired in the Elysee Palace’s unbalanced decision on the issue of Western Sahara, relations between Algeria and Paris’s European neighbors are progressing remarkably, which portends French isolation in North Africa, which is what the Socialist candidate for the presidential elections, Ségolène Royal, warned against.
The former minister and leader of the French Socialist Party sounded the alarm because of Emmanuel Macron’s policy, which led to the loss of many of Paris’s economic and geopolitical interests in the Maghreb region, due to its incomprehensible throwing into the arms of the Moroccan regime, at the expense of other countries considered key to Paris’s policy in the region.

Royal: Macron isolated Paris from the Maghreb and Francophone Africa

Ségolène Royal wrote in a “tweet” on her Twitter account, Sunday, July 19, 2026, commenting on the loss of French interests in Algeria: “Energy and public works contracts with Italy, and a trip to Germany that yielded about thirty contracts including green hydrogen and the automobile industry, and the upcoming visit of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, to Algeria to present several projects, marginalizing France after being excluded from the Sahel region and Africa.” Francophonie is the result of a disastrous diplomatic policy.”
The president of the “Algeria-France Association” here refers to the privileges that Italy has gained from its excellent relations with Algeria, in terms of deals in the field of energy and public works. She also referred to the visit of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Germany last weekend, which resulted in the signing of about thirty agreements, affecting the energy sector and renewable energy (green hydrogen), as well as the automobile industry, especially the “Opel” brand, which decided to localize the manufacture of its engines in Algeria, while the French “Renault” factory is still closed. About the activity.
The other blow that Paris received, according to Ségolène Royal, is the visit of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, this Monday, July 20, 2026, to Algeria, which increases Paris’s isolation in the region, after it was expelled from the Sahel region and Francophone Africa as a result of Macron’s policy and his disastrous diplomacy, in the words of the Socialist Party’s candidate for the upcoming French presidential elections.
In the same context, Royal expressed her shock at what is happening to France in its relations with Algeria, saying that relations between the two countries “are now witnessing an almost complete cessation in the partnerships of our institutions in the industrial, agricultural, construction and port sectors,” while “political skirmishes have resumed in the past few days, ignoring strategic necessities,” in reference to the repercussions of the statement of the French Prime Minister, Sebastien Lecornu, about Western Sahara, last Thursday, from the regime’s capital. Moroccan.
The former French Minister of the Environment stressed the need for the two countries (Algeria and France) to reach an “understanding free of bias” in favor of one country at the expense of another, in reference to the French position without calculated consequences on the issue of Western Sahara. She wrote: “We must rebuild the bridges of understanding between the two shores of the Mediterranean, away from any dependency or alignment with the political and diplomatic choices of sovereign countries.”
Here, Royal referred to her political project in the French presidential elections expected next year, regarding how to deal with sensitive issues, such as the Western Sahara issue, which was the direct cause of the destruction of relations between Algeria and Paris: “With the advent of 2027 (the date of the French presidential elections), it will be necessary to revive diplomacy characterized by wisdom and insight, based on calm and mutual respect, with all neighboring Mediterranean countries, in a way that consolidates a fruitful partnership and serves common interests.”
The French politician’s tweet came on the eve of the visit led by the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, to Algeria, which the Spanish press considered an announcement of “finally turning the page on the dispute” regarding the issue of Western Sahara after Madrid’s deviation from international law and United Nations resolutions, and strengthening the bilateral partnership through agreeing to increase Algerian gas supplies, and strengthening the presence of Spanish companies in the Algerian market, in order to dedicate the new trends.
According to the Spanish “Europa Bras” agency, citing its sources in the government, the Spanish party is seeking to increase the amount of Algerian gas that reaches Madrid via the “Medgaz” pipeline, which connects Algeria directly to Spanish territory, by about 10 percent, and to double the shipments of liquefied gas transported by giant ships, due to its competitiveness due to its ease of transport via pipelines or via giant tankers, by virtue of the distance factor, a trend that is framed by the European Union’s decision to stop importing Russian gas with the coming Next year.
After Italy accounted for the largest shipments of Algerian gas due to the extended stability in long-standing bilateral relations, the Spanish partner is also trying to benefit from the improvement of its relations with Algeria, by increasing shipments of liquefied gas and natural gas transported through pipelines, which indicates that the French party will be the loser in this equation, because it was betting, since Macron’s visit to Algeria in the year 2022, on doubling Algerian gas exports to France, an agreement that did not happen at the time, before… It is completely faltering after the setback that bilateral relations suffered on July 30, 2024, when the French President decided to blatantly side with the Moroccan autonomy plan in the issue of Western Sahara.
