According to Jam Jam Online, quoting Xinhua, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sun Li, said in a procedural vote on Iran’s nuclear issue: The Security Council has never reached an agreement on the competence of the “three European countries” (England, France, Germany) to start the “snapback” mechanism. Resolution 2231 of the Security Council expired on October 18 last year and the Security Council has stopped investigating the nuclear issue of Iran.
China’s representative in the United Nations Security Council said: Some countries deliberately ignore the differences and concerns of the members of the Security Council, forcefully press for the resumption of sanctions against Iran, and try to hold meetings with canceled agendas, and bear full responsibility for the difficult situation of the Council. In the current situation, the Security Council should play a constructive role, not blindly push sanctions and should not become a tool to advance the political goals of individual countries.
Sun Li added: China asks the members of the Security Council to seriously implement the measures related to the “termination day” of Resolution 2231, to maintain the authority and multilateral diplomatic credibility of the Security Council, and to create favorable conditions for a political solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.
The representative of China emphasized: Years of experience have proven that the correct solution to Iran’s nuclear issue is related to the authority and effectiveness of the international nuclear non-proliferation system, the long-term stability of the Middle East, and global peace and stability. Currently, the US and Iran have reached a ceasefire and are exploring negotiated solutions, but the situation remains sensitive, complex, fragile and marked by instability and uncertainty.
He added: In this context, the Security Council should stand by peace and the right side of history in dealing with related issues. China believes that the following issues should be comprehensively addressed: First, Iran’s demands for the peaceful use of nuclear energy should be comprehensively addressed; Second, the relationship between the parties should be managed based on equality and mutual respect; Third, reasonable security concerns must be balanced among all parties.
China’s representative at the United Nations called on all involved parties to maintain restraint and adhere to their obligations according to international law and the goals of the United Nations Charter, cancel unilateral sanctions, consider the legitimate security concerns of each other and neighboring countries, advance the negotiation process step by step, and strive to build a balanced, effective and stable security structure in the Middle East.
Sun Li stressed: Security Council members should focus on the overall political solution of Iran’s nuclear issue, seriously buy time and space for diplomatic efforts, and create a positive atmosphere for diplomatic negotiations.
