Within the framework of the state’s orientation to support and enhance electrical interconnection projects and integration with the networks of neighboring countries, and in light of the strategic importance of the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Greece, which represents great importance for achieving sustainable development and transforming Egypt into a regional center for energy exchange between the three continents of the world “Africa, Asia and Europe,” Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, met at the ministry’s headquarters in the new capital, Alexandros Alifragx, representative of the Greek Kopoulosis group of companies working in the fields of renewable energy and based on the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Greece, and Asimena. Karakriakou from the consulting office “Afry”, the project consultant, and the accompanying delegation, to discuss implementation developments and the development of work in the project at the level of technical studies and ensuring the safe transmission of electricity, and studies related to lands for solar and wind energy projects within the framework of the project.

The meeting, in the presence of Engineer Mona Rizk, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and Engineer Adel Al-Hariri, branch member for studies and planning at the company, discussed the development of work and developments at the level of the cooperation agreement in technical and economic studies for the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Greece, which aims to export electrical capacities of up to 3,000 megawatts to Europe via the Greek network, within the framework of the strong and distinguished relations and partnership between the two countries, and maximizing returns and benefiting from natural resources.
The meeting touched on discussing locations for establishing renewable energy projects, extending transmission lines for generating energy, as well as the results of meetings between the electrical network operators in Egypt and Greece and the project developer, in addition to developing and strengthening the unified network in the two countries and the extent of the electricity transmission network’s readiness to accommodate the new capacities transferred through the interconnection process.
Dr. Mahmoud Esmat stressed the strategic direction to support and enhance electrical interconnection projects and integration with the networks of neighboring countries, explaining that the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Greece represents a great importance for achieving sustainable development and comes within the framework of a general strategy for electrical interconnection with the European electrical network so that Egypt becomes a regional center for energy exchange and a bridge for transferring and exchanging electricity between the three continents of the world, stressing the importance of interconnection projects in general, and the interconnection project with Greece in particular, based on the vision of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and its implementation. The state’s policy is to rely on renewable energies and reduce the use of traditional fuels, which is what the interconnection project with Greece is based on, to maximize returns and properly manage and exploit renewable energy sources.
Dr. Mahmoud Esmat added that there is a desire and work by the governments of Egypt and Greece to finish the project, indicating that there is a clear plan to complete the necessary procedures for the electrical interconnection project, which is considered an important gateway to the connection between Egypt and Europe.
He stressed the importance of interconnection and exchange of electrical energy in supporting the energy mix, especially renewable energies, which will bring economic benefits to the countries and parties concerned, explaining Egypt’s active participation in all regional electrical interconnection projects, to benefit from natural resources, especially new and renewable energy sources in light of Egypt’s wealth in solar and wind energy.
