The recent publication of the 1926 Census figures provides a lucky 10pc of Ireland’s homeowners with the key to a fabulous time machine; allowing them to open a window into exactly what was happening within the walls of their homes a hundred years ago; and in the earliest years of our fledgling state. Because today around one in 10 of our housing stock was constructed prior to 1926.
Unlike the previous released data from 1901 and 1911, it is somewhat more difficult to locate a residence in the 1926 data files without having the occupants’ names. It means that the previous two releases (1901 and 1911), still online in their “old” published forms, are far more useful to homeowners who want to track down details of their current home’s past by searching the property itself.
