The games were first held in 1976, but this year one thousand eighty six competitors are registered to play. Bjarki Sigurðsson, Sýnar’s reporter, took a look at the mountain and spoke to some who came to the competition.
“As long as we get participants, we just grow and grow, that’s okay, we can handle more people and we don’t compromise on that,” says Fjalar Úlfarsson, one of the organizers of the games.
He says the setting is bigger than ever before and that they are trying to keep up with the number of people who want to participate in the games. For a while there was a lot of fog and a difficult place in the mountain, but the difficult conditions made it difficult for the competitors.
Most of the competitors that Bjarki talked to were of the same opinion, it would be difficult to ski in the fog, but it would still be good on the track. There was also something about people making a trip up a mountain, not to compete, but to inspire others.
“There are better slopes here in Akureyri and more open areas,” said Olivia Þóra, a skier, in conversation with Bjarka, “the skiing has gone pretty well today,” she added.
