Teachers at the Pamelus Burke Primary School recently participated in an engaging and informative professional development session focused on strengthening literacy instruction in the primary classroom. The session was facilitated by Dr. Kerlester Johnney, an experienced special education teacher, literacy advocate, and educational consultant.
The workshop focused on “Phonics for Reading Success Building Strong Readers Through Evidence Based Literacy Instruction.” Teachers explored practical strategies for developing students’ phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding. They also examined common reading difficulties and discussed how educators can use students’ errors and assessment information to identify specific areas of need.
Throughout the session, teachers participated in interactive discussions. They were introduced to practical strategies that can be implemented immediately in their classrooms, including explicit phonics instruction, ongoing progress monitoring, The importance of establishing clear classroom systems and routines to maximize learning time was also emphasized.
The session was well received, with teachers participating enthusiastically and sharing their own experiences and ideas. Dr. Johnney encouraged educators to maintain high expectations while providing students with the individualized support they need to succeed. She reminded participants that when teachers understand how children learn to read, they are better equipped to provide effective intervention before students fall further behind.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participating educators received certificates of completion in recognition of their commitment to professional growth and improved literacy instruction.
