The member parties of the European Union, the Social Democrats (SD), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Liberal Party (LP), and the Party of European Progress (SEP), the Bosnian Democratic Movement (BDP) and the Movement for Grief signed today the annex to the Memorandum of Cooperation on joint and coordinated political action within the supra-party platform of the European Union.
SD President Damir Šehović said that some political projects arise overnight and disappear quickly, while the situation is different with political movements.
“They grow slowly, step by step, when people realize that the idea is bigger than an individual. The European Union is such a movement, an emancipatory movement, and we do not claim that it is ideal… This is the best attempt to gather as many people as possible – people who are convinced that this country deserves more”, he stated.
Šehović said that the European Union was created as an alternative to the government, but also to the opposition.
“That partisanship is a limited concept… The identity of Montenegro is more important than anyone’s party identity,” he added.
He pointed out that the point is to send a clear message today.
“The expansion of the European Union is not ending, but just beginning. That is why it is to be expected that in the coming weeks and months, civil lists, independent movements, and why not independent MPs will join…”, said Šehović.
He said that they are not waiting for someone to bring them together, but that they are doing it themselves, claiming that they are not doing it for the sake of positions and armchairs, but for the sake of Montenegro.
The head of the SDP, Ivan Vujović, said that the European Union is not a collection of parties, but a platform for the state.
“None of us loses our name and our story… We put Montenegro before the parties, always… No one dominates because the rules and decisions are common… Here it was always the most difficult to gather forces,” Vujović said.
He stated that the European Union wants people with them who will enable them to strengthen the idea of a European and civil Montenegro.
LP leader Vatroslav Belan said that they want the best for the citizens – the development of a democratic, European and civil Montenegro.
“Our compass of all here together is clear to everyone. Everything else is a conversation, and this is the direction… Many parts of our country are still waiting for development… The European Union is the home of all communities”, he added.
He said that multi-ethnicity is the greatest value of Montenegro.
“Serious politics is built on the strength of arguments and respect for interlocutors… We see that as our strength… We are happy that this strength is now even greater,” he said.
Member of the SEP in the Podgorica parliament, Ilija Mugoša, stated that not only a memorandum on cooperation is being signed today, but that Montenegro can and must do better.
“SEP is a new political force that is growing day by day, and today the process of an electoral alliance begins… We have been talking to the citizens for a long time and the citizens want more serious work… Our platform is not a closed political alliance, but an open platform,” he said.
BDP representative Bejto Šahmanović said that they care about the creation of a knowledge society, and that they are proud of the results they have achieved two years since the establishment of BDP.
“We are aware that we can only achieve better results by making joint sacrifices.. We are bringing all our capital into this initiative… We enter into this arrangement as equal partners… Great deeds are not made by numbers but by sincere ideas”, he pointed out.
Šahmanović said that the European Union will be the government after the next elections.
Husein Đoković, the representative of the Movement for Grievances, said that the movement was originally created to act at the local level, but because of the broader idea, they decided to act at the state level as well.
“We are here to build a democratic, civil Montenegro… In us you will have a serious and reliable partner”, he pointed out.
SEP was formed in June 2024 by the former Montenegrin Prime Minister and former Deputy President of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), Duško Marković. He did it because, as he stated then, he sees the future of Montenegro differently from the DPS. His party has parliamentary status in Podgorica.
BDP was founded in July 2024 by former long-time officials of the Bosniak Party (BS), dissatisfied with the state of affairs in it. The BDP is led by former long-time BS official Sead Shahman. That political entity has not yet participated in any elections in Montenegro.
When it comes to the Movement for Sorrow, it gained parliamentary status in the elections in that municipality, held in the spring of 2023, in a coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which is part of the European Union.
As “Vijesti” previously wrote, joining the European Union does not mean “extinguishing” and losing the political subjectivity of SEP, BDP and the Movement for Tuzi – it means only entering a model in which, together with other constituents, they will act on a supra-party basis.
