Authorities in Xaysomboun Province have officially suspended the search and rescue operation for two people who remain trapped inside a cave in Phansay Village, Longchaeng District, citing severe weather and safety concerns.
The announcement was made on June 6 by the Xaysomboun Provincial Disaster Management Committee after more than two weeks of rescue efforts that began on May 22.
According to provincial officials, persistent heavy rainfall and rising water levels inside the cave significantly hampered rescue operations. Despite continuous pumping efforts, teams were unable to lower water levels sufficiently to continue the search safely.
Geological assessments also identified additional hazards, including rockfalls at the cave entrance and sediment blockages within the cave system, believed to have been caused by flash flooding. Experts concluded that conditions posed an unacceptable risk to rescue personnel.
The operation involved extensive support from government agencies, civil society organizations and international rescue specialists. Cave diving experts from seven countries — Thailand, Finland, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, France and Australia — participated in the mission alongside Lao rescue organizations and volunteer groups.
Rescue teams successfully located and extracted five survivors from the cave on May 27. All were transferred to Longchaeng District Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
Following consultations with technical experts and rescue authorities, officials decided to terminate operations inside the cave to ensure the safety of rescue personnel.
The committee expressed gratitude to government agencies, domestic and international rescue teams, volunteers and members of the public for their support and contributions throughout the operation.
