SAN MARINO – He died in the night between Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 November Antonio Carattoniformer Captain Regent and long-standing figure in San Marino politics. He would have turned 81 on November 8. Born in Sant’Agata Feltria in 1945, he dedicated a significant part of his life to political and institutional commitment, holding important positions in the Government and in the Great and General Council.
His experience in the institutions began in 1978, with his election to the Great and General Council, where he remained until 1988. He returned to sit on the parliamentary benches from 1993 to 1998, going through some of the most significant seasons of San Marino politics.
From 1983 to 1986 he held the position of Deputy for Industry and Crafts, assuming government responsibilities in an important period for the economic and productive development of the Republic.
Between 1993 and 1998 he also carried out international representation roles, participating in the work of the Council of Europe as an observer and representing the Great and General Council at the OSCE.
The highest moment of his institutional career came on 1 October 2006, when he assumed the Supreme Judiciary of the Republic together with Roberto Giorgetti. The two Captains Regent remained in office until 1 April 2007, exercising the functions of Heads of State for six months according to the San Marino constitutional tradition.
Carattoni had gained his political experience in the progressive and socialist area. In 2004 he joined the executive committee of the Party of Democrats, a group which in 2005 joined the Socialist Party of San Marino giving life to the Party of Socialists and Democrats. Within the PSD he held positions in the governing bodies and in the party secretariat.
In 2006 he also returned to the Great and General Council as a substitute member elected from the PSD lists.
Alongside his political activity, carried out in parallel with his profession as a freelancer, Carattoni was part of the boards of directors of San Marino RTV and the Istituto di Credito Sammarinese, also contributing to the economic and cultural life of the country.
In recent years he had cultivated his interest in the history of San Marino, dedicating himself in particular to the economic and financial affairs of the Republic. In September 2021 he published the volume “The financial scandals in the history of the Small State”, a work of historical reconstruction that crosses episodes and controversies from different eras.
The book traces events ranging from eighteenth-century counterfeiters to the Banca Mutua Popolare, from Prestito a Premi to the case of the Ercolani furniture factory, offering a glimpse into the difficulties and contradictions that accompanied the development of the San Marino economic system.
An interest in historical memory that was combined with the long experience gained in the institutions, testifying to the desire to delve deeper into and recount even the lesser-known aspects of the history of the Republic.
With the passing of Antonio CarattoniSan Marino loses a former Head of State, an exponent of the socialist tradition and a protagonist of public life who, over several decades, contributed to the country’s parliamentary, government and international representation activity.
He leaves behind his wife and two children. Our deepest condolences go to his family and those close to him.
