MUSCAT: The National Heart Centre at the Royal Hospital has recorded a medical achievement, the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman, as a medical team has managed to implant the first CardioMEMS sensor for the remote monitoring of patients with heart failure.
The sensor implantation procedure was performed by a specialised medical team comprising Dr Arif bin Ishaq al Balushi and Dr Amna bint Sulaiman al Busaidi, in a step reflecting the trend toward employing modern medical technologies in the follow-up of heart failure patients and enhancing the healthcare provided to them.
The sensor enables wireless, direct measurement of pulmonary artery pressure through interventional catheterisation, without the need for open surgery, thereby contributing to continuous monitoring of the patient’s condition and supporting timely therapeutic decision-making.
The device also provides a proactive monitoring system by transmitting daily readings related to hemodynamics and pulmonary artery pressure levels to the medical team, enabling the detection of changes in the patient’s condition and the early identification of indicators of health deterioration and fluid retention before clinical symptoms appear.
This technology allows medical personnel to adjust treatment plans and medication dosages in accordance with changes in the patient’s condition, and to reduce the need for repeated hospital visits and emergency admissions, thereby contributing to enhancing the stability of the patient’s health and improving the quality of life of patients and their families. — ONA
