New York (United Nations), June 3, 2026 (SPS) – Dr. Sidi Mohamed Ammar, member of the National Secretariat, representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations and coordinator with MINURSO, confirmed that the Sahrawi issue received strong support during the annual regional seminar of the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples (Committee of Twenty-Four) of the United Nations General Assembly, which was held recently in the capital, Managua, Nicaragua.
This confirmation came during the dialogue conducted by the Sahrawi diplomat yesterday from New York with the Sahrawi National Television to talk about the conclusion of the work of the regional seminar of the Special Committee on Decolonization and the latest developments related to the international peace process and its prospects.
In this context, the Sahrawi diplomat referred to the positions of support and solidarity expressed by member states from various continents, as countries from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean expressed their strong support for the Sahrawi people’s exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence in accordance with General Assembly Resolution No. 1514 (XV) containing the Declaration on Granting Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.
They also called for the need to redouble efforts at the level of the United Nations and the Special Committee to accelerate the holding of a referendum on self-determination for the people of Western Sahara in accordance with the mandate for which the MINURSO mission was established, and thus accelerate the decolonization of the last colony on the African continent.
The seminar was also an opportunity for the Sahrawi delegation to hold bilateral meetings with the Nicaraguan authorities, where a meeting was held with Mr. Jaenczke, one of the two Nicaraguan Foreign Ministers, who delivered a letter from the President of the Republic and the Secretary-General of the Front, Mr. Ibrahim Ghali, addressed to the Presidents of Nicaragua, Mr. Daniel Ortega and Ms. Rosario Morio, dealing with bilateral relations between the two countries and the latest developments in the Sahrawi issue.
The Sahrawi delegation was also received by the Bureau of the Nicaraguan National Council, headed by Mr. Gustavo Borra, where the talks included informing parliamentarians, including members of the Parliamentary Friendship Association with the Sahrawi Republic, on the latest developments in the national issue, especially at the United Nations level.
Regarding a question about the latest developments related to the UN-sponsored peace process in Western Sahara and its prospects, the Sahrawi diplomat recalled that the beginning of this year witnessed the holding of three ministerial meetings co-chaired by the United Nations and the United States of America, as the pen-holder regarding the MINURSO mission at the Security Council level.
These ministerial meetings, which were held twice in Washington and once in Madrid, brought together the foreign ministers of the two parties, the Polisario Front and Morocco, as well as the foreign ministers of the two neighboring countries and observers, Algeria and Mauritania. The discussions centered on examining ways to implement the recent Security Council resolution 2797 (2025). In this context, he stressed that all that can be said about these discussions is that they constituted the beginning of a path, but it is still too early to judge its process and outcome, as a result of a number of challenges that still exist.
The Sahrawi diplomat added that everyone knows that the Moroccan occupation state is still continuing its attempts to perpetuate the reality of occupation and impose it by force, in addition to its ongoing violations of human rights in the occupied territories of the Sahrawi Republic, which was recently confirmed by the United Nations Committee against Torture in its reports regarding the detainees of the Gdeim Izik group, stressing that all of these practices do not reflect good faith and do not contribute to creating the appropriate atmosphere for progress on the peaceful path.
He concluded by saying that the United Nations continues its efforts to advance the peace process. In this context, the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Mr. Staffan de Mistura, continues his contacts with both parties to the conflict as part of his preparation for an upcoming tour to the region that includes contact and meeting with the two parties to deepen discussion and consultation on many issues related to the peace process sponsored by the United Nations in Western Sahara.
