The city of Prague is receiving funding of nearly 70 million crowns for the redesign of náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad. The funds come from the Ministerstvo pro místní rozvoj ČR and are being provided as part of the EU programme Integrovaný regionální operační program (IROP).
The renovation of Jiřího z Poděbrad Square is one of the most important current projects aimed at upgrading public spaces in the Czech capital. The goal is to significantly improve comfort, safety and the overall quality of the environment at one of the city’s most frequented squares.
The funding covers part of the work, the total cost of which amounts to around 477.8 million crowns. Construction work began at the start of 2024 and is scheduled to be completed in June.

“Jiřího z Poděbrad Square is one of the most important and most visited places in Prague. Thanks to EU funding, we can noticeably improve the quality of life for residents and visitors,” said Prague City Councillor Zdeněk Kovářík. The modernisation focuses in particular on improving the design of the public space, increasing safety and upgrading green areas.
The core of the project is a comprehensive redesign of the popular square in Prague’s Vinohrady district. Plans include new rows of trees, a modern irrigation system using rainwater, and the restoration of the existing fountain. At the same time, pedestrian routes are to be improved and safety across the entire area enhanced.

A particular focus is on upgrading the surroundings of the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord. A small forecourt will be created in front of the church, which is expected to provide space for cultural events and public activities in the future.
