Clinical Psychologist and Director of Mental Health Services, Alisa Alvis, has called for more collaboration and investment in people who struggle with mental health issues to ensure they are not under-resourced, under-served, and stigmatized.
Alvis brought this issue to center stage on June 30, 2026 at an event where the Rotary Club of St. Vincent South handed over a refurbished Occupational Therapy Unit (OTU) at the Mental Health Facility in Glen, along with occupational and recreational stimulation supplies to patients.
Speaking at the event, Dr Alvis said that the handover event was not simply to admire new walls or enjoy air conditioning and refurbished equipment, but to mark something far more significant.
She referred to the hand over as a renewed commitment to the dignity of every person who walks in the doors of the OTU, who is seeking care and restoration.
“For too long in St Vincent and the Grenadines, and across our region, mental health facilities have existed at the margins of public consciousness and public investment,” she noted.
Alvis added that people who are living with mental health conditions tend to be hidden away, under-resourced, under-served.
She attributed this reality to the stigmatization and silence that has shaped people’s priorities.
