Is the government using taxpayers’ money to silence its critics? That is the explosive allegation coming from Public Service Union President Dean Flowers after a social media advertisement targeted Union Senator Glenfield Dennison this week. Flowers welcomed Dennison “to the club,” suggesting he is only the latest public officer to face what the union describes as a government-sponsored attack. Flowers claims the Briceño administration is dipping into the public purse to produce political ads aimed at discrediting public officers who challenge its decisions. Here is how he puts it.

“Firstly I would have to say to Senator Dennison, welcome to the Club. You have now joined a very prestigious club of individuals who bear fruits. Nobody stones and empty mango tree. So when you see this attacks it is because you are doing something right. When you see a government who has access to one point nine billion dollars using those funds to attack a public officer who is pretty much immaterial in the larger scope of things. It does not even open up old wounds for me, because this is what we do. We tell the truth and try to inform and educate the Belizean people. The misleading ads have to end. It is just for a little while they have to do it. Truth and our job continues from now in perpetuity. And only idiots, I want you to air this, only idiots and fools support those ads and add commentary to them.”
