Princess Catherine of Wales will go to Italy next week for her first official foreign event in more than three years, writes “BBC”.
She will visit the historic northern city of Reggio Emilia – her first foreign royal visit since undergoing cancer treatment. The last one was in Boston, USA in December 2022 together with Prince William.
Katherine’s solo ride on May 13 and 14 will support her campaign for early childhood education. The princess will “research” the Italian city’s unique approach to early childhood education. “The Princess is very much looking forward to her trip to Italy next week,” said a Kensington Palace spokesman, commenting on her momentous return to international tours.
Catherine will see “for herself how the Reggio Emilia approach creates an environment where nature and loving human relationships work together to support children’s development,” said a Kensington Palace spokesperson.
The Italian city is the birthplace of a child development philosophy that emphasizes personal relationships, learning through play, and being guided by children’s own interests and enthusiasm.
During the visit, the princess will meet with educators, parents, children, local representatives and businessmen.
This two-day trip abroad marks the next stage in Catherine’s full return to royal duties.
After being treated for cancer, she announced in January 2025 that she was in remission. But Catherine has spoken of the “good days and the bad” during her recovery from what she described as a “life-changing experience”.
She is consistently one of the most popular members of the royal family, according to opinion polls, and her latest comeback is expected to generate a lot of interest, especially among front-page editors.
There have been short trips to France and Jordan, as well as private holidays, but this will be the Princess of Wales’ first official foreign visit in almost three and a half years.
