Ulaanbaatar,
April 10, 2026 /MONTSAME/. President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa met with miners and
employees of Baganuur JSC, a subsidiary of Erdenes Mongol LLC, during his visit
to the Baganuur district of the capital city.
During
the meeting, the president expressed his appreciation to the generations of workers who have ensured a stable supply of coal for the central energy grid for 48
years, contributing to citizens’ well-being and the country’s development. He also
provided a brief overview of policies and activities of the head of state,
implementation of nationwide programs, and the current socio-economic
situation.
Baganuur JSC supplies
47% of Mongolia’s thermal coal demand and 52% of the central region’s
consumption. In 2025, the company mined 4.8 million tonnes of coal, invested
MNT 37.2 billion, cleared long-standing debts, and reported a net profit of MNT
2.7 billion. The
company contributed MNT 105 billion to the state budget, MNT 19 billion to the social
insurance fund, and MNT 126 million to the Sovereign Wealth Fund.
Acting
CEO Otgonbold Terbish said that the company plans to maintain production at 4.8
million tonnes this year and increase output to 8 million tonnes by 2028.
A coal
pyrolysis plant, to be financed with MNT 255 billion by Erdenes Mongol, is
expected to produce annually 600 thousand tonnes of semi-coke, 82 thousand
tonnes of low-temperature tar, and generate 40 MW of electricity. The project
is estimated to create over 400 jobs locally.
Under
the national “Billions of Trees” movement, Mongolia has planted and cultivated
116 million trees nationwide. Baganuur JSC has contributed by growing around
520 thousand saplings in its nursery and investing MNT 2 billion in land
rehabilitation.
During
his tenure as Prime Minister, President Khurelsukh decided to allocate
MNT 23.5 billion of Japan’s concessional loan to modernize 27 percent of the
company’s mining equipment and machinery.
He commended
the company’s workforce for supporting national initiatives such as the “Food
Revolution,” “Billions of Trees,” and “Healthy Mongolian” programs. He also
emphasized that the Mongolian state has consistently recognized and valued the
significant contributions of miners, who uphold the nation’s energy lifeline,
serve as a cornerstone of development and prosperity, and, through their
knowledge and skills, have played a vital role in advancing the mining sector to
its current level.
