A 73-year-old Westmoorings resident was found dead on Monday afternoon in what police are treating as an apparent suicide at a luxury apartment complex along Ocean Boulevard.
The deceased has been identified as Wayne Yip Choy, of Apartment 202, Harbour View, Westmoorings.
According to police reports, officers of the Four Roads Police Station were dispatched around 2.20 p.m. following a telephone report from the management of the apartment complex.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with the complex manager, a 72-year-old woman, who said she had been near the front gate speaking with security personnel shortly before 2 p.m. when she heard two “explosions” coming from within the compound.
She said she raised the alarm and, along with security officers, proceeded to investigate the source of the noise.
The group subsequently discovered the body of Yip Choy lying face down in the car park area beneath a tree. He was observed to be holding a firearm, with apparent gunshot wounds to his upper body.
Emergency Health Services (EHS) were contacted, and a medical team responded to the scene.
District Medical Officer Dr Alberto Roldon later examined the body and pronounced the man dead.
Firearm recovered
Crime scene investigators processed Apartment 202 and the surrounding area and seized several items including a red-handled knife, duct tape, plastic wrap, notebooks, a journal, two mobile phones, and an iPad.
Investigators also recovered a firearm licence booklet for a Glock 9mm pistol registered to the deceased, along with a magazine containing 19 rounds of ammunition.
At the scene where the body was discovered, officers further recovered a Glock pistol, which was rendered safe, along with a magazine containing additional rounds.
CCTV footage reviewed
Police also reviewed CCTV footage from the compound, which reportedly showed Yip Choy walking into the car park area under a tree moments before the incident. The footage allegedly captured him discharging a firearm and collapsing to the ground shortly after.
Investigators confirmed that the deceased was a licensed firearm holder, and that he routinely updated his licence at the Four Roads Police Station.
Suicide note recovered
Officers also reported the discovery of a letter in the deceased’s possession, the contents of which are believed to be of a suicidal nature. The document, along with personal effects including identification documents, was taken into police custody.
