THE SP PNG Hunters are planning to take another Hostplus Cup match around the country after the success of this year’s Country Round in Goroka, Eastern Highlands.
Hunters chief executive officer Scott Barker confirmed that early discussions are already underway for another regional game, with Kokopo in East New Britain, Mt Hagen in Western Highlands and Lae in Morobe emerging as possible host venues.
Barker said the club wants to continue building stronger connections with rugby league fans across Papua New Guinea and ensure the Hunters remain a team that represents the whole country.
“I’ve had conversations with East New Britain Governor Michael Marum (former Hunters head coach) about going back to Kalabond Oval,” Barker said.
“I’ve also had talks about going to Lae, potentially. I’ve also had talks about going to Mt Hagen as well. We want to do something regionally again.
“Planning for all that will begin in 2027.”
This year, the Hunters hosted their Hostplus Cup Country Round in Goroka where they played against the Ipswich Jets. The event attracted strong support from local fans and gave regional communities the chance to experience the Queensland Rugby League competition up close.
Barker described the Goroka experience as a major success.
“It was fantastic, a great experience, what we did in Goroka this year,” he said.
“The Hunters at the moment do represent everyone and we need to make sure we’ve still got that connection around the country.”
While a final decision remains outstanding, Barker hopes that another regional match becomes a reality.
“So my plan is, yes, I’d like to see us take another regional game. Where that is, I don’t know yet.”
Meanwhile, Kalabond Oval in Kokopo continues to undergo major upgrades which started late last year. The redevelopment is progressing steadily with the venue expected to be fully completed in November.
A decision on the next Hostplus Cup Country Round is expected later next year.
