Organisers have extended the registration deadline for the women’s division of the Prime Minister’s Cup as they continue their push to secure 12 teams for the inaugural competition.
The new deadline is August 9, according to Prime Minister’s Cup Organising Committee chairman Omari Eastmond.
“Women’s football empowers female athletes, both on and off the field. Young female players consistently report greater confidence and motivation compared to non-players,” Eastmond said.
“However, I think the biggest advantage of women’s football is breaking the stereotype that it is a male-oriented and male-dominated sport.”
Last month, organisers announced that a women’s competition would be introduced for the first time in the tournament’s three-year history.
The women’s champions will receive the same $100 000 first prize as the men’s winners.
Prime Minister Mia Mottley welcomed the move when the tournament was launched.
“When they came to me and said that the Prime Minister’s Cup for men would get $100 000 and the women would receive $50 000 because they are less teams, I told them this Prime Minister will not practise gender discrimination,” Mottley said at the time.
“I am issuing a challenge to the women of Barbados to let us try to achieve 12 teams.”
