The strike by Eimskip’s deckhands and boatmen was canceled yesterday after an agreement was reached on ship manning. Bergur Þorkelsson, chairman of the Seamen’s Association, says that people have left the table in relative peace.
“Yes, we reached an agreement on the staffing, but it is not always the case that everyone gets their way,” he says in an interview with mbl.is.
The strike had been going on since Monday, but it covered three of the company’s ships, Dettifoss, Brúarfoss and Selfoss.
It is said that Icelanders have been replaced
There was considerable dissatisfaction among Eimskip’s employees that Icelandic employees had repeatedly been replaced by foreign and cheap labor.
“Both parties will be just right happy and right unhappy,” says Bergur.
He says that certain ships have been manned with Icelandic crews.
