A possible violation of Belize’s sovereignty should bring both sides of the political divide together, but Opposition Leader Tracy Panton says the government is leaving the Opposition in the dark. Panton is disappointed that there has been no briefing on the alleged airspace incursion, especially as Belize continues to face tensions with Guatemala along its land and maritime borders. She says the country needs clear answers and a united response.

“I was at the meeting, as I said, last night in Orange Walk when I saw the report, I’m disappointed that the government has not tried to reach out to the opposition immediately to give us a proper brief on that situation. It is concerning, it is disconcerting, and, we need answers, clear answers, how that was allowed to happen and what explanations, what official explanation we will receive, the people of this country will receive on that incident.”
The Guatemalan issue has historically been confronted in a non-partisan manner. Michael Peyreffitte represents the Opposition as one of Belize’s agents at the International Court of Justice.
