The Panama team will seek its eighth qualification for the U-20 World Cup and its first for the Olympic Games.

The national team was located in pot 2 of the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship drawa tournament that will be held in Mexico and will grant tickets to the 2027 World Cup event.
The Isthmus team, now directed by Mike Stump, integrates this second level along with Cuba and Guatemala, according to the official distribution based on the confederation’s ranking as of October 2025. This places Panama out of the seeding groupbut still with clear options to compete for one of the available spots.
Panama will try to return to a U-20 World Cup after having participated in the 2003, 2005, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2025 editions.
The Panamanian Football Federation confirmed on April 18 the appointment of Stump as the team’s new coach, replacing Jorge Dely Valdés, who was in charge of the process until October 2025.
It should be noted that Panama was runner-up in the 2025 Central American Sports Games and the Uncaf Tournament, both in 2025 and in the U-19 category. In both competitions, the team was led by Felipe Baloy, current coach of the U-17 team.
For his part, Stump arrives with recent credentials, after having qualified Panama for the 2023 U-17 World Cup in Indonesia.
Since his appointment, the coaching staff has launched an evaluation and monitoring process that includes players from the Panamanian Soccer League (LPF) and the Prom League, as well as players who were part of the U-17 process. Among them, several stand out who participated in the 2025 World Cup in Qatar under the leadership of Argentine Leonardo Pipino, which allows us to project a base with recent international experience.
The 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship will be held from July 24 to August 9 in Mexico and the competition will bring together the 12 best teams in the region, distributed into three groups of four teams each.
The official drawing will be held on Thursday, May 7 in Miami, at 10:00 am (Panama time), and there the groups and the match schedule will be defined, key elements to outline Panama’s path in the tournament.
The participating teams include the six best positioned in the U-20 ranking – United States, Mexico, Honduras, Panama, Cuba and Guatemala – along with Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Haiti, Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda, which advanced from the qualifying phase.
Beyond the regional title, the championship will award four World Cup tickets.
The teams that reach the semifinals will ensure their qualification for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will be held in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. In addition, the tournament champion will obtain a direct ticket to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
