The Orange Walk Town Council issued a public notice reminding residents that urinating in public is against the law. The Council cited a section of the Town Councils Act that carries fines of up to five hundred dollars. The council shared the warning on its Facebook page along with photos appearing to show the kind of behaviour officials are targeting.
According to the council, Section 26 of the Act covers a wide range of offences tied to keeping streets and public spaces clean. One provision bars allowing water, sludge, or what the law calls “filthy or noisome matter” to flow from a building or piece of land onto a street or public right of way. The council argued that public urination falls squarely within that language. The council stressed that urine in a public space is both filthy and a nuisance, particularly when it poses a health risk to others nearby.
Anyone convicted under the section faces a fine of up to five hundred dollars, along with the cost of any cleanup or repairs the offence requires.
Photos accompanying the council’s post show a man standing near an electric vehicle charging station with his back to the camera, apparently relieving himself against a wall in a public area.
