At least 40 people have drowned in the past five days in heat wave-related incidents in France, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said, as temperatures hit record highs in several major cities and the heat wave peaked in some European countries. The Independent reported.
“Swimming in unsupervised areas during a heat wave carries risks. Too many people try to cool off in rivers and canals without necessarily considering the risks,” said Sports and Youth Minister Marina Ferrari.

France, Spain and Italy have so far been hardest hit by the heat wave. France yesterday recorded its hottest June day and hottest night on record, with a minimum average of 21.6 degrees, according to Meteo France, and more than half of the country is on red alert.
In Spain, temperatures are reaching over 40 degrees in some areas, with a red alert in Andalusia in the south and Cantabria and the Basque Country in the north. Italy has issued a red alert for a heat wave in 15 cities, including Rome, Milan, Florence, Turin and Venice.
Several people also drowned in Germany, where temperatures of up to 40 degrees are reported.
