MUSCAT: Oman’s men’s national volleyball team have been drawn in a challenging Pool A alongside hosts Japan, Australia and Bahrain for the 2026 AVC Men’s Volleyball Continental Championship, which will be held in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, from September 4 to 13.
The draw places Oman against three experienced sides in what promises to be one of the most competitive pools of the tournament. Japan will enter as hosts and one of Asia’s leading volleyball nations, while Australia bring extensive continental and international experience. Bahrain, meanwhile, have established themselves as a strong force in Asian and Gulf volleyball.

The national side claimed the West Asian crown after defeating defending champions Qatar in straight sets in the final at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher. Oman produced an impressive performance to win 25-19, 25-15 and 25-23, securing the regional title for the first time.
The achievement provided another indication of the progress made by the national team under Tunisian head coach Nizar al Shukaili, with the players showing greater consistency, tactical discipline and composure in high-pressure matches.
Oman will now look to carry that momentum into Japan, where the level of competition will rise considerably. Matches against Japan, Australia and Bahrain will provide a significant test of the team’s ability to compete with some of the continent’s established sides.
The technical staff are expected to use the coming weeks to sharpen the team’s technical and tactical preparation, while continuing to strengthen coordination among the players ahead of the opening match.

Pool B consists of Iran, China, India and New Zealand, while Pool C features Qatar, South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Thailand, completing the 12-team field.
The championship also carries major international significance. According to the Asian Volleyball Confederation, the tournament winners will secure direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, while the top three teams will earn places at the 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship.
For Oman, the tournament represents another important step in the team’s development after a series of regional and continental appearances. Recent performances have demonstrated an increased ability to compete in demanding matches, including recovering from difficult situations and maintaining composure during decisive stages.

The West Asian title has further raised expectations, but the challenge in Japan will be considerably greater. Facing the hosts as well as Australia and Bahrain from the preliminary stage will require Oman to maintain a high level throughout each match, with serving, blocking, reception and concentration likely to prove decisive.
Oman will be aiming to build on the confidence generated by their regional success and translate their recent progress into a stronger presence on the continental stage, as the national team seeks to continue the upward trajectory of Omani volleyball.
