Just two weeks into his posting, U.S. Ambassador Andre Bauer has already begun reaching across Belize’s political divide. His early meetings have included key government officials and the Leader of the Opposition. Bauer says his mission is not about choosing political sides, but about finding partners who want to create opportunities, improve lives and deepen cooperation between Belize and the United States.

“With me it is not about parties. When I served in elected office, of course I ran under party leadership but I noticed that a lot of times, some of the biggest issues I was able to get passed I worked with folks on the other side of the aisle, because people and issues are not partisan. What people want at the end of the day, they don’t care about how governments work, they care about what governments does. I think, quite too often, folks worry about the label and not about what we are supposed to be up there doing. And so, I think there is a lot more that unites us than divides, no matter what side of the aisle you are on. I am non-partisan in this position. I feel like this is not suppose to be a partisan job, and so whether you are in the leadership or not in the leadership, if you can do something I think can help the people of our country or Belize or improve their lifestyle, I am going to work with anybody from any party or no party, if they can do that.”
Ambassador Bauer has also met with Prime Minister John Briceno and Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Fonseca.
