The National Cultural Foundation (NCF) has joined in mourning the passing of vocalist, songwriter, musician and mentor Mark Lord, who died in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
He was described as a singer whose voice became one of the defining sounds of the nation, with a musical legacy that shaped Barbadian life for more than six decades.

Mark Lord’s voice has been characterised as the essence of the nation’s heart and soul. His rich, elegant vocals carried the warmth of home, the pride of country and the spirit of a people. Through timeless classics such as My Country to Me and I Heard a Love Song, among others, he created music that continues to resonate across generations, reminding us of the enduring power of song to unite, inspire and preserve our identity.
A gifted vocalist, songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, recording engineer and composer, Mark moved effortlessly across ballads, reggae, folk, calypso and gospel. He performed extensively on the hotel circuit and appeared at numerous concerts on the island. His versatility also found expression in the calypso arena, where he performed as Lord Mark in the Battleground Calypso Tent, reaching the semi-finals of the Pic-O-De-Crop competition with Great Kings of Africa.
Beyond the stage and studio, Mark quietly invested in the future of Barbadian music, mentoring young people from his Bayville home and helping them discover their own voices. His remarkable contribution to Barbados’ cultural landscape was fittingly recognised with the Pride of Barbados Award during the We Gatherin’ 2025 Honours for the parish of St Michael, celebrating 60 years of preserving our musical heritage and uplifting his community through his artistry.
His passing comes as Barbados continues to grieve the loss of two other towering national figures—National Hero The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers and legendary musician Sir Emile Straker of The Merrymen. Today, another treasured voice has joined that immortal company, leaving behind a legacy that will forever echo through the cultural life of this nation.
The board of management, management and staff of the National Cultural Foundation extend heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, fellow musicians and the wider cultural fraternity.
Though the final note of his earthly performance has been sung, Mark Lord’s melody will never fade. It lives on in every heart touched by his music, every artist he inspired, and every Barbadian who proudly sings My Country to Me. May he rest in eternal peace, and may his voice continue to resonate in the great eternal choir, where every song is sung in perfect harmony.
