Fewer people entered the housing market in 2024, and more 25 to 35-year-olds were still living with their parents, according to latest figures from statistics agency CBS.
In 2024, some 518,000 people bought or rented their first house compared to 560,000 the year before. Around half the newcomers to the housing market were foreign nationals who came to the Netherlands to work or study without the option of living at home.
A further 22,000 came from “institutional” accommodation, such as a refugee centre, the CBS said.
Young people represented just 12% of first time buyers or renters. In total, some 96,000 people under the age of 25 bought or rented a house in 2024, down 29,000 on 2023.
The number of 25 to 35-year-olds living independently has also been affected by the shortage of affordable homes to both buy and rent. While the size of the young adult population rose 1.7%, the number living at home was up 5.6%, the CBS said.
