Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
In September 2015, all 193 UN Member States, including Ireland, adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ‘end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all’ as part of the new agenda: Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This framework is made up of 17 SDGs and 169 targets. Ireland had a significant role in its development and adoption, as co-facilitator, together with Kenya.
United Nations High-Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development (HLPF)

The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) convened from Tuesday, 7 July, to Wednesday, 15 July 2026, under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). This includes the three-day ministerial segment of the forum from Monday, 13 July, to Wednesday, 15 July 2026, as part of the High-level Segment of ECOSOC. The theme of the HLPF 2026 is “Transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals for a sustainable future for all”.
