On Monday evening, Mette Frederiksen (S) announced to the king that a government consisting of S, SF, M and R can be formed.
Mette Frederiksen (S), Pia Olsen Dyhr (SF), Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) and Martin Lidegaard (R) will present the government basis for the new government on Tuesday at 4 pm (1 pm Greenland time).
This is stated by the Prime Minister’s Office in a press release.
Mette Frederiksen could tell King Frederik on Monday evening that she could form a government consisting of the Social Democrats, SF, the Moderates and the Radicals.
The basis for the government will be presented ten weeks after the general election, and the government negotiations were therefore record-long.
The government itself and its ministers will be presented on Wednesday.
Frederiksen continues as prime minister
However, it is certain that Mette Frederiksen will continue as prime minister. She has been since 2019.
Monday night was Mette Frederiksen shipped from Marienborg, the Prime Minister’s official residence in the King’s Lyngby, to Odense, where the royal couple stayed on the royal ship “Dannebrog”.
– I have announced that a government can be formed after long negotiations, said Mette Frederiksen to the press after the visit to King Frederik.
– It is a government foundation that is good for the people who are in Denmark, the generations to come – and also for the animals, she added.
In a press release from the royal house, it was announced on Monday evening that the new government is supported by a majority in the Danish Parliament. But it did not say who constitutes the parliamentary basis.
82 mandates
The Social Democrats, SF, the Moderates and the Radicals together have 82 mandates.
In order to avoid having a majority against them, the parties therefore need support from, for example, Enhedslisten’s 11 mandates.
According to Enhedslisten’s group chairman, Peder Hvelplund, Enhedslisten is the parliamentary basis for the new government.
– We want to be a free and independent parliamentary foundation, which will also be able to vote against things we disagree with. But we agree on the overall direction, and we have had significant political impressions, says Hvelplund on Tuesday morning to P4 Nordjylland.
The Alternative has also been involved in the government negotiations until the end and is expected to be part of the government’s parliamentary basis. The party has five mandates.
Record-long negotiations
The record-long government negotiations offered a total of three royal rounds. Along the way, Venstre’s chairman, Troels Lund Poulsen, managed to be a royal investigator for two weeks, but there was not enough support for a VLAK government.
The previous record for government formation was from 2022, when 42 days passed after the election, before Mette Frederiksen could announce that a new government could be formed. It became the SVM government.
The actual formation of the government at the time took place two days later – i.e. 44 days after the general election.
