The decision to build the station arose through the process of its preparation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of Larnaca. The comparative evaluation of alternative scenarios highlighted as the optimal option the combination of measures to upgrade public transport, with the central station as a key element. The zoning on a state parcel in its area Larnaca marina ensures sufficient space for the development of infrastructure, rational organization of traffic and integration with the wider developments of the area.

THE central bus station of Larnaca was designed to function as a modern transfer hub that will simultaneously serve urban, long-distance and regional routes, as well as direct connections to Larnaca International Airport. The infrastructure aims to reduce dependence on the private car and meet national and European sustainable mobility targets.

The contract was signed, on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus, by the Senior Director of the Department of Public Works, Mr. Stelios Zervos, and, on behalf of the company Iacovou Brothers (Constructions) Ltd, by Mr. Alkis Iacovou.

The project concerns the study, construction and maintenance of the central bus station in Larnaca District and the improvement of a section of Faliro Street to serve bus traffic.

The project will be implemented in two (2) sections as follows:

    a) Section A: widening of a section of public road on Falirou Street, for the entrance and exit of buses to and from the Central Station with an axis length of about 108m. approximately, with the following characteristics: street width 15.50m., 3.50m. width of traffic lanes, one in each direction, 3.00 m. sidewalk width on the south side, 2.00m. width of sidewalks on the north side. Additionally, Section A includes the construction of the sidewalks on the southern side of Faliro Street.

    b) Section B: building facilities which include ticket offices, office spaces, waiting room, canteen, public and staff restrooms and staff rest area. The buildings will be covered by a metal canopy with an area of 3100m2. The development plot has a total area of 9750m2 about. In addition, the project will include 8 bus stops, 9 bus parking spaces (covered and uncovered), 7 staff parking spaces, 2 taxi parking spaces and 1 disabled parking space, a maintenance area with 2 bus parking spaces, a warehouse and a temporary taxi pick-up/drop-off area.

The contract was awarded following an open tender. The total cost amounts to €6,387,000 plus VAT. The start of the project is expected around mid-May 2026.

The signing of the contract is an important step for the implementation of an infrastructure project that improves the daily life of citizens and strengthens public transport. The new station is expected to be a key point of reference for transportation in Larnaca, contributing to reducing traffic congestion and improving quality of life.

The project is implemented within the framework of the Political Cohesion Program “THALEA 2021-2027” with the co-financing of the EU. The expenditure is covered by the centralized provision of the General Directorate of Development, with a transfer of appropriations to the relevant article of the Department of Public Works and the payments will be made by the Department of Public Works.
