The Honorable Ambassador Andreas D. Mavroyiannis was elected President of the Law Commission of the United Nations.
According to a statement sent to the media by Mr. Mavroyiannis, the election took place on Monday in Geneva, the first day of this year’s 77th Session of the International Law Commission (ILC).
The term of Andreas Mavroyiannis covers the entire session and extends until April 2027.
The International Law Commission is a subsidiary body of the UN General Assembly. It consists of 34 members who are elected by the plenary session of the General Assembly for a five-year term, by secret ballot.
They act as independent experts and come from all geographical groups. They are mainly eminent professors and experts of International Law, legal advisers of countries and diplomats.
The Commission’s mission is to promote the codification and progressive development of International Law. It has been operating since 1949 and has edited most of the multilateral UN Conventions and other legal texts.
Together with Andreas D. Mavroyiannis, Alioune Sall from Senegal was elected to the Bureau as 1st Vice-President, Alina Orosan from Romania as 2nd Vice-President, Rolf Einar Fife from Norway, as head of the Editorial Committee and Claudio Grossmann Guiloff from Chile as Special Rapporteur.
