In order to regulate sailing in the fjord, Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq has sent an application to the Self-Government for a zoning in Nuup Kangerlua.
Large cruise ships in Nuup Kangerlua has recently created a debate among citizens. Many find that the ships fill the fjord.
Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq understands the concern and shares the wish that tourism in the fjord takes place in a way where there is room for everyone.
This is what Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq writes in a press release.
Mayor Avaaraq Olsen (IA) therefore calls on tourist operators to show consideration:
– The ships should keep their distance from trappers and fishermen who work in the fjord, and avoid disturbing the wildlife, not least now that the reindeer hunt is approaching. At the same time, the municipality encourages the operators to generally respect the locals who use the fjord every day.
Zoning
Right now, the municipality does not have the opportunity to regulate sailing in the fjord, but they have drawn up a proposal for zoning the fjord.
The proposal has been created in collaboration with trappers, fishermen, tourist operators and citizens and must ensure a clear framework for where and how tourist activities can take place with respect for nature and the people who live off the fjord.
The proposal has been sent to the Self-Government and is awaiting approval.
Tourism is welcome in Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq. It creates jobs and income and shows our nature to the world. But it must take place in balance with the life that is already lived in and around the fjord, writes the municipality.
