KEY POINTS: Which major Danish companies have announced job cuts in 2026?

Companies in Denmark have announced significant job cuts effective in 2026, with shipping giant Maersk among those whose staff are affected.

Unemployment remains low in Denmark with the number of people who work in the country historically high.

Nevertheless, many of the country’s major companies have announced job cuts which will affect workers in 2026.

Bank Nordea is set to let around 1,500 staff members go during 2026 and 2027, it announced on March 17th.

The decision is part of a 2030 strategy first announced in November, which the company said will improve “structural efficiency.”

That includes savings of 600 million euros on costs by 2030, it said, including restructuring of staff positions. It did not specify which jobs will be cut.

The newly-fused AL Sydbank is meanwhile set to implement a new round of job cuts which will see 84 members of staff let go with a further 50 in line for “significant changes to their terms” it said on March 17th.

Formed through a 2025 merger between Sydbank, Arbejdernes Landsbank and Vestjysk Bank, the changes will be implemented this month, the company said. They are related to the merger in October last year, CEO Mark Luscombe said in a statement reported by news wire Ritzau.

“This is the hard part of the process but we are striving to treat all our staff decently and help them on their way,” he said.

another bank, New creditfired 143 people after its own merger with Spar Nord, with the job losses completed by the end of January. An additional 144 staff at Nykredit were offered a different role within the company.

Maersk sent shockwaves through its huge workforce in Denmark in early February when it announced major job reductions, many of which have already been implemented with staff leaving in March.

Up to 1,000 office staff in total could be let go by the shipping giant, Ritzau reported. The company had around 6,000 administrative positions at the start of the year.

The redundancies were set to be distributed between head offices as well as regional offices in various countries, including Denmark, aiming to save the company around 180 million dollars annually.

Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc told TV2 in February that the company is “heading into tougher times.”

“That is why we need to act with due caution and say what needs to be done to secure the business going forward,” he said.

Maersk’s 2025 results show a net profit of 2.9 billion dollars, around 18.5 billion kroner.

Pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk announced in September 2025 that it would cut 11 percent of its workforce, including 5,000 jobs in Denmark, as the maker of Ozempic and Wegovy faces rising competition for its anti-obesity treatments.

The drug maker said in a statement it would save eight billion kroner by slashing 9,000 jobs, including 5,000 in Denmark, across the company.

Some 4,600 of the Danish workers had left by the beginning of February, Ritzau reported.

bestseller, a major player in Denmark’s clothing and retail sector, confirmed in January that 135 of its staff would be let go after reports in the Danish media.

That comprises around 0.5 percent of the company’s total workforce.

Bestseller’s head of HR Louise Sylvest told newspaper Ekstra Bladet that the organization was making adjustments to “reflect the reality we are operating in.”

“Currently that means we are unfortunately going to have to say farewell to some colleagues in Denmark. It’s not an easy decision but we have concluded it’s necessary to keep us able to take the right steps going forward,” she said.

Also in January, wind turbine maker Vestas said it was letting go of 70 of its 330 staff at its Ringkøbing factory, financial media Marketwire reported.

Energy company Ørsted is also set to let workers leave between now and the end of 2027.

The company has already let 191 Danish employees go, regional media Zealand News reported in November. That was part of a move to cut around 500 jobs globally in the last quarter of 2025 and 2,000 in total by the end of next year.
