Kalinago artisans brought a display of indigenous creativity and craftsmanship to Roseau this week as part of a two-day arts and crafts exhibition at Prevo Cinemall.
The exhibition, held on September 17 and 18, 2026, was organized by Prevo Cinemall in collaboration with the Kalinago Council and arts and crafts makers and vendors from the Kalinago Territory. The initiative was aimed at giving local artisans an opportunity to promote and increase sales of their handmade products among Dominicans at home.
The event formed part of activities for Kalinago Week 2026, which ran from September 11 to 19 under the theme, “Honouring Our Past. Celebrating Our Culture. Building Our Future.”
Visitors to the exhibition had an opportunity to see a variety of locally made items reflecting Kalinago traditions, skills and cultural heritage. The artisans showcased products including bags, hats and necklaces, highlighting the craftsmanship and indigenous knowledge passed down through the Kalinago community.
The exhibition also recognized the contribution of one of the Territory’s noted artists. Kalinago artist Faustulus Frederick received the Prevo Cinemall Cultural Heritage Award for his work in the arts, history and preservation of Kalinago culture and Dominica’s heritage.
Frederick also served as Kalinago Chief from 1975 to 1978, a period that included Dominica’s transition to independence.
Through the exhibition, Prevo Cinemall and its partners sought to bring greater attention to Kalinago-made arts and crafts while creating an opportunity for artisans to connect with potential buyers and promote their cultural products locally.
